Friends of Cape Lookout National Seashore

Mission & Goals

The following is our mission statement:

The Friends of Cape Lookout National Seashore shall partner with the National Park Service/CALO, and other support groups, to protect, preserve, and enhance the historical, cultural, environmental, and recreational resources of Cape Lookout National Seashore.

To implement this mission, the Friends has set four basic goals to be achieved:

No. 1: Rehabilitate and restore the light tower to allow routine access by the public.

No. 2: Restore the Cape Lookout Light Station to its c1910 appearance. This goal is to return the original 1856 First Order Fresnel lens for exhibit at the Harkers Island Visitors Center, relocate and restore the 1907 Keeper Quarters, replace the Coal Shed lost during Hurricane Ophelia, replace the c1930 oil storage building, repair the Summer Kitchen, restore the historic landscape of the light station, and make long term infrastructure improvements.

No. 3: Support the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Cape Lookout Village structures. This goal is to restore and open to the public the U.S. Life Saving Service station and boathouse, to rehabilitate the 1917 U.S. Coast Guard station, and to rehabilitate other historic structures in the Village.

No. 4: Support the restoration of Portsmouth Village. This goal is to support the Friends of Portsmouth Village in their ongoing efforts to restore Portsmouth Village.
